IT TAKES AN ARTIST

2/1/2012

New ideas come about and until those ideas are drawn on a piece of paper they remain locked in the persons mind who came up with the idea. Almost everything you see today started off as an idea, it took an artist to turn that idea into a drawing that would become the finished product you see. For this reason I push my students to design ideas that takes them out of their comfort zone and allows them to use their mind, create and understand what they created. I believe that just drawing and painting things they are comfortable with will make them a better artist BUT when they are asked to design something they have never considered that is how a great artist is made.

So I have asked a group of students to design me a complete neighborhood BUILT UNDERGROUND. I have given them a few details of what I want and the rest is up to them. It is up to them to create this using their mind as well as their hands. Art should be well thought out not just splashed on a surface for the sake of splashing paint. It should have a direction and reason, it should communicate a simple understanding of what an idea is and help those who don't understand see what someone had in their mind.

Are you up to the challenge?
